I’ve never soldered in my life. Actually, I take that back… I did try once with my dad’s soldering kit (was a big gun) and I tried to mod my friend’s PS2 back over a decade ago. I almost destroyed it because the tip of the soldering gun was too big to handle the delicate/tiny parts on the PS2. That was the last time I ever picked up a soldering gun/pen until this past week.

Fast forward to present day, I found myself needing to test my soldering skills once again. In this particular case, my wife’s rear AC stopped working in her car. Googling around for the problem, a lot of search results came down to a rear AC blower transistor assembly failing that is notorious for her make/model/year of her car. The part itself cost $90 + labor at the dealership but the information I found said you could replace it for as little as 75 cents. The transistor assembly actually contains a small thermal cutoff resistor that is the part that fails in the assembly. By getting a replacement part (75 cents) and thermal paste, you can solder the new piece back onto the assembly to fix the AC problem. Long story short, I used this soldering tool kit and now my wife’s AC successfully works again.

I’m no electrical engineer and I didn’t need anything fancy (because I doubt I’ll need to solder again anytime soon). I purchased this kit because it was the only kit on Amazon that had not only a soldering pen, but a soldering wick, pump, soldering wire, and a stand all for a good price ($12.15 as of 7/25). As a beginner, it was everything I anticipated needing.

All of the items you see in the kit came in this crummy plastic shell with a paper sticker on it. It wasn’t professional at all and because of that, I was worried if the kit I bought for $12 would be any good. In the end though, I was pleasantly surprised and very pleased with my purchase.

I actually didn’t use the wick or pump, so I can’t tell you how good/bad they are. I did however use the stand, the pen (obviously) and the solder wire.

The stand is actually just a stamped piece of metal. You end up bending the middle “fork” from the base and that is what you lay your soldering iron on. The stand is a little flimsy and because of the weight/electrical wire of the soldering iron, you have to tinker with the iron to make sure it doesn’t fall off the stand. I ended up having to twist the gun so that the head of one of the screws on the rod caught onto the stand. It’s not bad, but it works.

As for the solder wire, you get a small tube of it. I probably actually only used a few millimeters of it. It seemed to have done it’s job.

As for the soldering iron, it works pretty nicely. When I first plugged it up, the tip started smoking a little bit. At first I was getting worried, but after a few minutes it stopped smoking. Not sure if it was the residue/finish that was burning off on the tip of the iron. I got a “pen” instead of a gun because of the pointy tip allowed me to solder small/precise pieces on an electronics PCB. I know nothing about wattage on a soldering iron, so I’m not sure how it would affect other jobs but it seemed to melt my solder with ease.

Overall I give this kit 5 stars. It’s really affordable and includes everything you would think you would need for a soldering job.

I purchased this to remove some small capacitors from a circuit board. However, it would not melt the existing solder not matter how long I waited for it to heat up.

I got this here on Amazon because I thought I got a good value for what I paid. I think I did actually. It comes with a solder pump, de-solder wick, 30w soldering iron, some solder, and a soldering iron stand. I will review each piece seperately.

-Soldering Iron is very comfortable with the grip and it works perfectly. It got dirty pretty fast but I think it’s normal and you should have a sponge or something nearby to clean it so often of the iron part won’t heat effectively.
-Soldering Stand works pretty well. Could be a little better, but what do you expect from a little metal piece.
-Solder itself is made of like 90 percent Tin and no lead and it works great!
-Soldering Pump works as good as others say. It’s not perfect but it does work. Just have to take a couple passes with it. It was the first time I used one so I might not have done it right.
-De-Soldering Wick I couldn’t get to work at all. I watched videos on how to do it, but it still wouldn’t absorb. I think this is just a really cheap product.

So after having all the pieces, I would say this kit is very much worth it. It is great for the beginner solder who doesn’t know anything other than reading and watching videos. I was actually going to get the starter kit with a project, but this kit is very much worth it. The soldering iron doesn’t look like the red one, it is blue and very cool looking. Check out my photo.
