I’ve used this product to sharpen lawn mower blades, putty knives and other things around the house. It is very easy to set up and to use. I no longe use my bench grinder.

this baby is the answer to my sharpening quest. Sharpened my mower blade, then put knife sharpener on and went to town. The first time through I used the course belt and then the fine. Worked good. The second time through I only needed the fine and got excellent results. I sharpened four kitchen knives in about three minutes and have good edges on all of them. this baby is the bomb !

    Work Sharp WS2000 Tool Sharpener

The Work Sharp 2000 is a well designed, easy to use sharpening power tool designed to take guesswork out of sharpening a variety of carpentry tools as well as general shop tools such as chisels or even hatchets or lawnmower blades. Chisels with a standard 25 degree angle can be slid into a special slot molded at the correct angle and given a precision grind in a few seconds. The top surface of a 6″ rotating disk is covered with replacealbe abrasive disks available in a variety of emery grades for cutting a bevel or honing a tool edge after basic sharpening with courser grade abrasives.

The Drill Doctor add on belt device is a very clever and fool proof tool for getting a razor edge on just about any knife. The hold down bolt on the disk is replaced with a drive pully and an abrasive belt slides over the pully and a spring loaded belt tensioner. A plastic cover slides over the belt tensioner once a belt has been slipped over the pullys. The cover is slotted on either side of the abrasive belt at 27 1/2 degrees, a good compromise angle for kitchen and shop knives. With the belt turning at 1700 rpm, magnet’s embedded in the belt cover hold the knife blade flat against the housing surface so the knife edge is always kept at the same angle every pass along the spinning belt. Because the abrasive disks and belts are disposable they require no oil or water lubricants and the combination of relatively slow speeds (most grinding wheels turn at twice the speed of the Work Sharp) and good ventilation avoid any risk that the blades will get hot enough to damage the temper of the steel.

I sharpened a set of medium hard stainless kitchen knives to a very acceptable level in a few minutes. This required only about a dozen passes on each side of the blade with a single fairly agressive abrasive belt. One of the knives I use mostly for slicing vegetables and fruits and wanted a very keen, razor edge. So I made a few more passes on this knife with progressively finer emery belts finishing up with a 12,000 belt–an extremely fine belt almost like a smooth cotton surface designed to polish an already well formed bevel. The result was spectacular. This knife could easily slice narrow strips off the edge of a sheet of newspaper without snagging or dragging at all. Wow, this is razor sharp!

This is the best home sharpening tool for kitchen knives I’ve ever used. I can get as good a result with my arkansas stones and diamond hones but the Work Sharp setup is much quicker and frankly doesn’t require the skill level that free hand sharpening on stones and hones does. I did use a very hard honing steel to finish up the knives but even after inspection with a loupe I’m not convinced the steel did much to enhance the sharpness after using that 12000 grit belt. They offer a leather pad that installs on the surface wheel and a lapping compound for fine honing blade edges. I did not test this but my experience with powered leather honing wheels is they can put an exceptionally keen edge on a properly ground edge. I will test the leather wheel out and update my review in the near future.

The only reason I did not give the Work Sharp-Drill Doctor 5 stars is that the belts are relatively expensive ($20 for a replacement selection of 6 or 8 belts) and they wear out rather quickly (I used up 2 or 3 in just doing 10 kitchen knives). My only other disappointment was that the molded belt cover is only available in the 27 1/2 degree angle. It would be very simple to offer covers with larger angles for heavier knives or cleavers or smaller angles for lighter gage kitchen knives. But to have essentially a new edge on your expensive chef’s knife–without giving up too much of that expensive blade in the process is a pretty good deal even if it costs a few bucks in abrasive belts. Life is too short of work with dull knives. I suggest you just get one of these systems.
